Confidence You Earn
Confidence built on the mat isn’t a pep talk. It comes from solving a problem you couldn’t solve last month — and knowing exactly how you did it.
Women’s No-Gi Jiu-Jitsu · Columbus, Ohio · Ages 16+
Every Wednesday night, the Women’s No-Gi class at 10th Planet Columbus gives women 16 and older a dedicated place to learn practical Jiu-Jitsu — escapes, positions, and control — through clear instruction and coached partner practice.
Beginners are welcome. You don’t need to be in shape to start. And your first class is free.

Why Women Train Jiu-Jitsu
Most fitness routines ask you to repeat the same movements and count the minutes. Jiu-Jitsu gives you something to solve. Every class teaches a position, an escape, or a detail you didn’t know the week before — and you can feel yourself getting better at it.
Jiu-Jitsu is built on leverage, timing, and position, so technique carries much of the load that size and strength would otherwise have to. That is why women of different sizes, ages, and athletic backgrounds can learn it, train it, and keep improving at it for years.
Confidence built on the mat isn’t a pep talk. It comes from solving a problem you couldn’t solve last month — and knowing exactly how you did it.
You learn to frame, create space, escape from underneath, and get back to your feet. No class can guarantee your safety, but skills practiced against a resisting partner are skills you actually understand.
Drilling and rolling build strength, mobility, grip, and conditioning as a by-product of learning — not as a chore you have to talk yourself into.
It is hard to think about your inbox while you’re working an escape. For an hour, the only thing that matters is the position you’re in.
Partner training means you learn with people, not next to them. Every woman on these mats started with a first class too.
Leverage and position let a smaller, well-trained person control a bigger, untrained one. You’ll start to feel that principle work in your very first class.
What Makes This Class Different
A one-off self-defense workshop can be a useful introduction, but a single afternoon rarely makes a skill stick. Skill comes from practicing the same positions week after week, with a coach and a partner. That is what this class is.
Step 01
Women’s No-Gi Jiu-Jitsu has its own place on the weekly schedule: a class for women, every Wednesday night.
It is a focused place to learn the fundamentals, ask questions, and train with other women at your own pace. When you want more mat time, the Adult Grappling membership also covers every other adult class on the schedule.
Step 02
10th Planet Columbus is a pure no-gi school. You train in a rash guard or fitted top with leggings or athletic shorts — there is no heavy uniform to buy before you start.
The curriculum is connected to the wider 10th Planet system founded by Eddie Bravo and built around modern no-gi grappling.
Step 03
Every beginner starts with the basics: how to move, how to protect yourself, how to work with a partner, and how to tap. Coaches set the pace for new students and show you what to do at every step.
What a Class Looks Like
Adult classes run about 60 to 75 minutes and follow the same rhythm every week, so you always know what comes next.
You’ll be guided through each part. Nobody expects you to know a technique before it has been taught — that is what the class is for.

Part 01
Movement drills that prepare your body for grappling and teach the basic ways Jiu-Jitsu moves on the ground.
Part 02
The coach demonstrates a position or escape step by step, then breaks down the details that make it work.
Part 03
You practice the technique with a partner, slowly at first, until the movement starts to feel natural.
Part 04
Partners apply what they’ve learned against real resistance. Every round stops the moment someone taps.

The Academy Behind the Class
The women’s class is part of 10th Planet Columbus, a pure no-gi Jiu-Jitsu academy on North High Street in Clintonville.
The academy is owned and led by head coach Zack Holycross — a 10th Planet black belt, United States Marine Corps veteran, and educator. His standard shapes every class on the schedule: clear instruction, structured progression, and a culture grounded in resilience, discipline, community, and connection.
On the Mats
Train hard, train smart, and look after your partner. Tap early, tap often, and come back next week a little better than you were.
That is the whole deal — and it is the same for a first-class beginner as it is for a black belt.
